The Federalist Papersはアメリカ合衆国憲法を支持する85編の小論文から成るシリーズである． アレクサンダー・ハミルトン、ジェームズ・マディソン、ジョン・ジェイが執筆し、3人はパブリアスという名でまとめて執筆した。 当初は「フェデラリスト・ペーパーズ」ではなく、「ザ・フェデラリスト」として知られていた。
出版当時、この論文の著者は極秘にされたものであった。 1804年にハミルトンが亡くなって初めて、彼を著者の一人とするリストが公開されたのである。 そのリストには、3分の2の論文がハミルトンのものであると記されている。 その多くは、後にマディソンによって論破され、ハミルトンが書いたとされる論文のうちのいくつかは実際に書かれていた。 ハミルトンは、憲法を強固に信奉し、『フェデラリスト』第1号で、このシリーズは「君たちの注意を引くと思われる、登場したすべての異論に満足のいく答えを与えるよう努力する」と書いている。 他にGouverneur MorrisとWilliam Duerの2人が検討された。 モリスはこの申し出を断り、ハミルトンはデュアーの作品を好まなかった。 それでもデュアーはPhilo-Publius（Publiusの友人）という名で憲法を擁護する3つの記事を出版した。
ハミルトンは、偉大なローマのPublius Valerius Publicolaに敬意を表して、このシリーズのペンネームとして「Publius」を選択することになる。 本家プーブリウスは、ローマ共和国建国に貢献したとされている。 ハミルトンは、彼がアメリカ共和国の建国に再び貢献するだろうと考えた。
John Jayは『連邦主義論文』のうち5つの論文の著者である。 後に合衆国主席判事となる。 ジェイは4篇を寄稿したところで体調を崩し、プロジェクト終了までにあと1篇しか書けなかったというから、その間の大きな空白もうなずける。
James Madisonはハミルトンの主要な協力者で、後に合衆国大統領となった “憲法の父 “である。 連邦論文』のうち29篇を執筆したが、マディソン自身、またそれ以降も多くの人が、もっと書いたと主張している。 ハミルトンのリストで知られている誤りは、54番をジョン・ジェイに誤って当てたことであるが、実際にはジェイが64番を執筆しており、マディソンの提案に一定の根拠を与えている。 統計的研究のほぼすべてが、論争中の論文はマディソンによって書かれたことを示しているが、執筆者自身が完全なリストを発表していないため、誰も確実なことはわからない。
権利章典への反対
連邦論文、特に連邦論文84号は、後に合衆国権利章典となったものに反対したことで有名である。 ハミルトンは、憲法は国民を制限するために書かれたのではないと考え、権利章典の追加を支持しなかった。 憲法は政府の権限を列挙し、あとは州や国民に委ねるものだと考えたからだ。 もちろん、この考え方は普遍的なものではなく、アメリカは憲法だけでなく権利章典も手に入れた。 アレクサンダー・ハミルトン
